Packing for Your Summer Holiday

It’s that time of the year again! The start of Summer means vacations of all sorts are about to be embarked on. Whether you’re going near or far, to somewhere hot and beachy or cultural and adventurous, what is certain is the need to pack smart – i.e. having most, if not all of your outfits planned ahead of time, choosing easy fabrics that are travel friendly (no satin or linen on long vacations!), and coordinating your looks to your destination.

My process of packing, which might sound a little crazy, begins with the overall color palette I imagine my destination to be, hence dictating my wardrobe choices. For example, my holiday in the Greek islands brought forth numerous white cover-ups and azure blue maxi dresses, and a week in India meant shades of yellow and purple by day and gold lace at night. The destination also dictates the movement of the fabric, for example any European riviera holiday leads me to wearing structured stripes, midi skirts and massive sun hats, whereas resort holidays, be it in Phuket or South Africa, makes it physically impossible for me to languish in anything besides silk and jersey.

Right now I am packing as we speak, and I’d recently found myself in love with one-piece swimsuits. Local swimwear brand The Papeete makes the most body flattering one-piece swimsuits, and I’ll definitely be wearing the Lovelocks Maillot and Queen of Hearts swimsuits on this trip! If you’re feeling more risque, I love Agent Provocateur and Herve Leger’s swimwear lines – just layer on the sunblock to avoid some overly interesting tanlines!

I am obsessed with coverups, they’re so easy to throw on, makes a great outfit statement alongside your swimwear, and if I’m at a resort I’ll most likely spend my entire day lazing around in a bikini + coverup combo and still look effortlessly put together. My favorite brands are Melissa Odabash – for the go-with-everything caftans, Indah – for their backless dresses and jumpsuits, and Calypso – for the prettiest off-shoulder dresses and embroidered caftans.

To me, maxi dresses are THE quintessential vacation staple. It’s effortless, makes a grand statement, and above all is just so comfortable (who wants to be fidgeting and adjusting clothes while in vaca mode?). If you like prints and billowing long dresses, Issa is the perfect brand to turn to. The fabrics are so travel friendly that not a wrinkle will be in sight even after a long flight. I’m also absolutely head-over-heels for my friend Janesuda’s eponymous brand that creates the most stunning dresses and the lace jumpsuit pictured above, perfect for a glamorous night.

The essential piece to top every outfit off. My sunglasses of choice is of course my dear friend Rene’s brand Reve by Rene, there’s no other way to put this except this is hands down the best sunglasses label that has emerged in recent years (a special feature on Rene and Reve will be coming soon!). As for my big floppy sun hats, I am of the belief that hats are not worth splurging on (they get squashed in the suitcase, I often forget them and leave them behind at the pool…), so imagine my delight when I discovered American Apparel’s giant floppy sunhats – they’re a vacation staple for me!

Now I simply must get back to my packing. Happy Summer Holidays!
